Didier Drogba made his first league appearance of the 2008/09 season at the City of Manchester Stadium after recovering from his knee injury.
Ricardo Carvalho scored his first goal of the season while Joe Cole sported a headband throughout the fixture after gashing his head during England's mid-week game against Croatia.
The first meeting between Chelsea and Manchester City under City's new regime was an exciting end-to-end fixture that had the crowd on the edges of their seats throughout.
Captain John Terry was shown the red card late on in the game, which means he will now miss the important fixture against Manchester United.
