Just a day before his first match as Chelsea manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari has reaffirmed that the side he picks will be going out to win.
It may be the first match of a pre-season tour, but the Brazilian is keen to instil a winning mentality in his side from day one. He uses our nearest rivals as a yardstick to follow.
'I know Manchester United stayed here last season and won 3-0. If it is possible for us we will win 3-0, or more, but we need to think that our opening team [Guangzhou Pharmaceutical] is in good condition and we will have to try on Wednesday,' Scolari explained.
'We came to win. It is important for Chelsea to win every game, friendly or not, but we know Chelsea today and expect some problems in the game. We are starting, but sure we play every game to win.'
The problems he refers to are a lack of match practice in his players, who only returned to training just over two weeks ago. With this in mind, he urges supporters not to expect too much from the Blues in this outing.
'Our players in this moment are in good condition but not as we want for the championship,' he said. 'It is our first game, and we are training very well for 10 days.
'We started a new job in Chelsea. I am the new coach with a new philosophy, different training and sure, we have some little problems for after tomorrow but this is normal and we start. We have very good players and they play very well.'
It is not Scolari's first visit to China, and this is a trip he is happy to be making, having taken over as manager after the tour was announced.
'We decided China because they invited us and gave us what we need for our players and for the future ideas about our team,' he began.
'We have a good chance here to play three games in this area and for us it is important now to train and to play some games.'
One man keen to get going is John Terry. His last outing in a Chelsea shirt was the Champions League Final, in which he missed the penalty that would have awarded us a first European Cup.
He admits it is something that still plays on his mind two months later.
'Every morning I wake up and it is the first thing on my mind, I still think of it and am still disappointed by it,' said the 27-year-old.
'I'm a big man, a big character and it's down to me to deal with that. The games with England at the end of the season helped to flush it away a little bit, but the success that we can hopefully bring with the new manager and players can hopefully flush away those bad memories completely.'
Terry believes that after that disappointment, the squad is now well placed to pick itself up and push for silverware in 2009.
'We have some new players already but and is my job to make them welcome at Chelsea. We are a big club and the manager has signed some big players already. It is my job to make them welcome and now we are away for two weeks we are looking forward.
'After the disappointments of last season we are very determined to win the Premier League and as many trophies as possible. We see the hunger in the new manager and the team he has brought in, and it is on the minds of everybody to do exactly the same.'
